Concepts and Nike SB celebrate the often skipped over Thanksgiving festivities with a poultry-themed Southern delicacy the Turducken with their collaborative new Dunk High “TurkDUNKen.”
Concepts has gone from a Boston-based footwear and apparel boutique started in 1996 to one of the sneaker industry’s most in-demand collaborators. Already well known for their quality and attention to details with other models, Concepts’ Deon Point wants sneakerheads to see their more humorous side with this upcoming design.
From an interview with Highsnobiety, the Creative Director says, “We’ve always had a tongue-in-cheek approach to our collaborations, and with Nike SB they really let us lean into that and run with any idea we have…I had so much fun creating this shoe with the team and I hope that can be seen in the final product.”
So, what’s a Turducken?
Despite being inspired by the fevered dream of a mad Cajun chef, the Turdunken comes crafted with the highest quality materials and the most intricate of details. For those unfamiliar with the Lousiana Thanksgiving meal popularized by John Madden, the Turducken consists of a deboned chicken nestled into a deboned duck nestled into a turkey and cooked as one dished filled with stuffing. The popularity of Turducken lies in the multiple ways it can be prepared; be it braised, roasted, grilled, or barbequed.
Get into the look…
More than just a play on words, the Concepts team mixes corduroy, fleece, suede, and full-grain leather in realistic tones to represent the bird trio. The quarter panels remarkably resemble the down of a mallard duck. Light Grey premium leather cut with a laser cutter creates the flared edges. The same color makes up the intricate toile print collar and sockliner of smooth full-grain leather.
Neutral toned suede hits the perforated toe box leading up to an iridescent Purple-ish Green tongue below Golden Yellow laces. Likewise Yellow makes up the Nike SB “Duck High Pro” tongue label showing off Concepts branding on the reverse side. More iridescence makes up the quarter panel Nike Swooshes wrapping into the rich Brown fleece overlays reminiscent of a turkey’s feathers. Forefoot overlays take on what appears to be corduroy in a mix of Orange and Brown coloring. Everything rests atop a pale Orange midsole and a Light Orange rubber outsole.
But wait, there’s more…
The Concepts x Nike SB Dunk Turdunken isn’t just a pun wrapped in premium materials. Everything from the packaging to the specialty turkey leg Nerf vortex football invokes the feelings of what makes Thanksgiving worth celebrating. Friends/Family, football, and food. The outer box invites wearers to Roast friends with an array of words and phrases including “Who’s Earl Johnson?” and “Don’t Smoke Crack.” Meanwhile, the inner box mirrors a stainless oven bursting with flames. A secondary set of Neutral laces, Concepts x Nike DRI-FIT chicken socks, a turducken poster, and the aforementioned Nerf football come included.
No doubt, the specialty box will be in limited supply. However, Concept is also dropping Nike SB apparel line featuring a beanie, t-shirt, and flannel jacket. All sure to make you the most “fly” person around the Thanksgiving table. Concepts drops an early release for the SB Dunk High Turdunken November 14th online and at select locations in Boston and NYC, with a general release through the Nike SNKRS app November 21st.
